The Dubuque Symphony Orchestra presents classical music’s favorite 3 B’s: Bach, Brahms and Beethoven on Saturday, November 9 at 7:30pm and Sunday, November 10 at 2:00pm at the Dubuque Five Flags Theater. Joining the orchestra will be over 110 singers from the Dubuque Chorale.
The first half begins with two of Bach’s most beloved sacred cantatas: “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” from Cantata No. 147 and Cantata No. 150, “For Thee, O Lord, I Long”. In the late 17th and 18th-century, the sacred cantata was usually performed in church and was essentially a sermon in music. These were some of Bach’s greatest works and he is believed to have written some 300. Gorgeous orchestral accompaniment wrapped around beautiful choral melodies will inspire the audience to look to the heavens.
After his mother’s passing Brahms’ grief generated his longest and most profound work: A German Requiem. The orchestra and chorale will perform the Requiem’s fourth movement for chorus “How lovely is Thy dwelling place”. It is gentle, lyrical and a vision of untroubled faith. Brahms’ “Song of Destiny” will follow. It is a sublime choral-orchestral works that features one of the most heart-lifting melodies Brahms ever created.
The second half features Beethoven’s “Pastoral” Symphony. Beethoven often spent time roaming fields and woodlands from dusk to dawn. The “Pastoral” is a musical expression of his deep love for nature. Sounds reminiscent of birdsongs, a bubbling brook, rumbling thunder and rain, and a boisterous dance will lead you on a journey through the countryside.
