Dubuque Symphony Orchestra presents A Confession of the Soul – Sibelius 2, February 24 & 25, 2018
(DUBUQUE) – The Dubuque Symphony Orchestra (DSO) presents the third in its 2017-18 Classics Concert series: A Confession of the Soul – Sibelius 2.
Peter Warlock’s Capriol Suite continues the orchestra’s season-long exploration of lively dance suites, this short collection of six tuneful court dances will open the concert, and may remind some of our regular concert-goers of the Grieg Holberg Suite performed in November.
Chicago-based violinist and DSO Concertmaster Eleanor Bartsch is featured in Mozart’s “Turkish” Violin Concerto. This piece, composed when Mozart was only 19, captivates with its matchless elegance and delight in pure melody. “I studied this piece for the first time as a high school student” states Bartsch. “Every time I come back to it year after year, it feels like an old friend -- I discover new things and find even more joy, superb craftsmanship, subtlety, and humor in Mozart's musical language.”
The concert culminates with Sibelius’ Second Symphony, which brings mystery and majesty together in a sweeping, climactic musical expression. “The symphony, over the course of several movements, seems to be searching for something,” states Music Director & Conductor William Intriligator. “Searching for a solution to problems, searching for a triumph over obstacles. This piece was written just after Sibelius wrote his Finlandia, so the struggles inherent in the opening movements of the symphony might be similar ones to those that inspired that tone-poem: a search for freedom and independence from tyrannical forces. And like Finlandia, the second symphony ends with one of the most exciting, glorious, and triumphant finales!”
The concerts will be held 7:30 pm Saturday, February 24, and 2:00 pm Sunday, February 25 at Five Flags Theater, downtown Dubuque. Intriligator will also present a free pre-concert lecture in the Five Flags Theater on Sunday, February 25 at 1:00 pm. Tickets ($17-87) are available through the Five Flags Box Office (563) 589-4258, www.dubuquesymphony.org, or through the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra app available as a free download in the App store and Google Play.
