After 15 years as a YMCA professional, he consulted in fundraising primarily for capital campaigns. He worked with Mercy Medical Center in 2003-2004 in their successful, “Campaign for Healthy Hearts” resulting in the Cardiac Center and Cath Labs at Mercy. He returned to Mercy in 2008 as the inaugural executive director for the Mercy Health Foundation and retired from there in June 2017.
John is a graduate of George Williams College with a Health & Physical Education BS and obtained his Masters in Camping, Outdoor Education and Administration degree. John continues to be a fitness enthusiast as you will often see him running along Grandview or side streets most of the year.
John is active in Dubuque serving as Venue Captain for the Julien Dubuque International Film Festival (JDIFF) and he emcees Dubuque Main Street’s “Dubuque and All That Jazz” as well as being on the Jazz Committee. John has been a part of the planning committee for Dubuque Brewfest on Ice since its inception and writes “Wine & Spirits” monthly column for Julien’s Journal. John sang with the Dubuque Chorale for two years and is currently serving on a search committee for a new chorale artistic director.
John currently serves as a member of the Advisory Committee for Sitka Salmon Shares and is a past board member for JDIFF and Riverview Center. John Danced the second year in the Dubuque Chamber’s “Dancing with the Stars” raising over $11,000 for Mercy’s Autism services. He has been a Rotarian since 2002 and a member of the Dubuque Rotary Club since 2008. In Rotary John is the chair for the Humanitarian Grant Committee. He is a retired member of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy and a member of the local chapter of Association for Fundraising Professionals. John served as a member of the Olympic Board for USA Bobsled and Skeleton (USABS) for eight years and saw Team USA take several Olympic gold medals. He continues to serve as a Trustee for USABS.
John has been a season ticket holder to the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra since 2008 and sponsors principals Joshua Russell (Piano) and Corey Mackey (Clarinet).
