Harriet Heitzman and her late husband, Wes, have attended and been supporters of the Dubuque Symphony since it was founded in 1957 by good friends, including Clark Stevens, Paul Laube, Patsy and Saul Greenstein, and Gaylord Couchman. Harriet has enjoyed seeing the Symphony grow in stature and improve in performance through the years.
Harriet and Wes both graduated from Iowa State University. In 1947 they moved to Dubuque where Wes founded Heitzman Construction Company. Harriet is an active volunteer in the community. She has been President of Dubuque County Social Services Board, served on Aquinas Institute of Theology Board and served many years on Finley Hospital's Sunshine Circle, is a past President of the YWCA and served on the joint YWCA/YMCA Board. She received the Nancy Hill Award as well as the Trustee Award from Hillcrest Family Services, having served on its Board for 20 years and as its President during its transition to a modern social service agency.
Harriet is a past President of Dubuque Arts Council Board. She has been an active member of that Board since 1984 and has a long held passion of its mission of bringing artists to the schools. She received the Elisha Darlin Award from the Dubuque County Fine Arts Society in 1996 for her service to the arts.
Harriet has three children, Wes (Dubuque), Becky Peters (Platteville), and Tom (Lyme, NH), and enjoys time with them and her five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
