First season with the DSO: 1972, I have only missed about a half dozen sets since I began full time 41 years ago.
Hometown: Dubuque, IA
Education: I received my Bachelor’s degree from Lawrence University Conservatory of Music in Appleton, WI and my Master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
My earliest musical memory: Going to the city band concerts in the park.
I knew I would make a career in music when: I had a band director my junior year in high school who started me learning other instruments. He also assigned me to teach younger musicians. I enjoyed learning new music and instruments and also sharing my passion with younger kids.
Advice for young musicians: Learn how to count and how to mark music to avoid losing your place. We have lots of rests in percussion. Play with confidence!
Other instruments I play: Percussion; most band instruments.
Other than performing music, I’ve always thought it might be fun to be a: cabinetmaker like my brother.
One thing people don’t know about me: I love to paint – walls, ceilings, furniture, or percussion equipment.
