First season with the DSO: 2011 - 2012
Hometown: Watertown, WI
Education: Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance from the Eastman School of Music
My earliest musical memory: As a toddler, I began imitating my brother at the piano as he practiced.
Favorite thing about performing music: I love being able to spend time learning and understanding a piece of music and then having an opportunity to share what I’ve learned with an audience.
Favorite composer and/or period: Bach
A special story about my instrument: As a young teenager, I traveled to an instrument maker in downtown Chicago to purchase my first viola. The entire shop was filled with the aroma of wood used to craft the instruments. I spent hours in a room with racks of beautiful stringed instruments, and as I played each viola to find the perfect one, I remember struggling occasionally to hear my sound over the “L” as it rushed by several stories below. When I recall the day I found my viola, I always think of the aroma of the workshop and the rumbling of the “L.”
Other than performing music, I’ve always thought it might be fun to be a: Naturalist at a national park or a photographer.
One thing people don’t know about me: I am a true violist, having begun studying at age 7 on a violin strung as a viola
